Police commander blames road accidents on driver indiscipline

Kumasi, Sept. 27, GNA - Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) James Sarfo-Peprah, Ashanti Regional Commander of the MTTU, has identified indiscipline on the part of drivers as the main cause of road accidents in the country.

He was not happy that in spite of the numerous road safety campaigns embarked on by stakeholders in the transportation industry, most drivers still flouted motor traffic regulations with impunity. Speaking at the launch of the new drivers' license in Kumasi, DSP Sarfo-Pepra, cautioned drivers to be disciplined at all times to avoid recklessness on the road and protect life and property. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) introduced the new license as part of measures to ensure that licenses issued to drivers were of international standards.

DSP Sarfo-Peprah advised drivers to avoid drunk-driving, speeding, reckless overtaking and disrespect for traffic signals to ensure decency on the road.

He appealed to personnel of the MTTU to work in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Ghana Police Service and always avoid corrupt practices.

This he said would help maintain the good image of the Service whilst ensuring efficiency in their work.

Mr Joseph Osei-Wusu, Chief Executive of DVLA urged drivers to patronize the new license in their own interest.

He said the new license had personal details of recipients such as passport picture, signature, national identity number, class of license, date of issue and expiry and that those in need of the license should apply for it at any of the DVLA offices directly instead of passing through middlemen.
