Radio presenter gives to female prisoners

Kumasi, Dec. 27, GNA - Mr Kwame Obeng-Sarkodie, a radio presenter at the Garden City Radio (GCR) in Kumasi on Monday presented food items and toiletries worth 5.5 million cedis to the Kumasi Central Female Prisons as his personal contribution to the upkeep of the inmates. The items were 60 pack of fried rice, assorted biscuits, five crates of soft drinks, three crates of eggs, two boxes of chicken thighs, sanitary pads, a carton of bar soap, five packets of toilet rolls and six bottles of dettol.

Presenting the items, Mr Obeng-Sarkodie said it had been his long cherished desire to support the needy and the deprived in the society but could not do it due to financial difficulties. He said, however, that at last he had been able to fulfil his desire due to the assistance of individuals and organizations. He mentioned Mr George Ayisi-Boateng, a businessman in Kumasi, his own mother, Mckeon Catering Services and friends as those who helped him to bring his idea into fruition.

Mr Obeng-Sarkodie told the inmates that what he had presented to them during the yuletide was an indication that people thought of them and that God was with them and should try to change their lifestyles when they came out of the prison. Pastor Opoku Ware of the Rescue Outreach Church in Kumasi, who accompanied the donor, advised the inmates to let life at prison change their lives. He asked them to be obedient and humble to the officers and pledge that after their release they would never return to prison but would lead good lives and help build the country at all levels.

Mrs Josephine Fredua-Agyemang, Chief Superintendent of Prisons in-charge of the Female Prison, thanked Mr Obeng-Sarkodie for the gift and stressed that the items would go a long way to supplement government's support for the prisons. She expressed the hope that other individuals and organisations would emulate the gesture.
