Regional climate conference to open in Sunyani

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) will host the three-day Organisation of Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Africa Regional Conference from Tuesday, October 15-18 in Sunyani.

It is on the theme: “Climate Change and Its Impact on Africa: The Role of Science and Engineering for Combat”.

A statement issued by the Conference Secretariat in Sunyani on Friday, said it was part of the efforts by the UENR to establish a Research Centre on Climate Change.

Africa is extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change because many countries’ economies are heavily dependent on climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, forestry, health and hydro-power.

Unfortunately, Africa has a low research capacity pool on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The conference would bring together accomplished women scientists on the continent, and set a framework to increase and improve the quality of climate modeling and climate related research in Africa and for Africa.
