Professor Kodwo Ewusi, Dean of Graduate Studies at the Methodist University College has called for the renaming of the University of Ghana after the late Dr J.B Danquah.
He said Dr J.B Danquah played a key role in ensuring that the university was located in Ghana during the colonial days and it is important that he is honoured.
“Government should rename the University of Ghana after J.B Danquah as he worked tirelessly to ensure that it was established in Ghana,” he said.
Prof Ewusi said this during the 48th J.B Danquah Memorial Lecture organised by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, in Accra.
He described Dr Danquah as an entrepreneur, academician, journalist and traditionalist, whose seven books that were published are still being consulted by students of law, religion and others.
He said Dr Danquah also contributed in coining the name Ghana, adding that, anyone who mentioned Ghana praised the memory of Dr Danquah.
The three day annual J.B Danquah lecture is on the theme “Human Capital and Economic Growth in Ghana”.
The J.B Danquah Memorial Lecture Series was instituted in 1968 by the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in memory of the foundation member of the Academy, Dr J.B Danquah, who died in February 1965.
The event consists of a series of three lectures delivered by either a Fellow or a distinguished non-Fellow.
