Residents of Bukere, a suburb of the Bolgatanga Municipality in the Upper East Region have appealed to the government to take urgent steps to complete the Bolgatanga-Bukere enclave road project.
The road, which links Bolgatanga, the Regional Capital and other major communities including; Zaare, Nyariga, Yorogo, Bongo, vea and their environs among others has been left to deteriorate since work came to a halt in 2016.
The bad nature of the road has led to several accidents and vehicles stuck especially during the rainy season.
A visit to the community by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) revealed that erosion had eaten into the road making it difficult for road users to ply, while other road users take alternative routes to their destination which were equally not motorable.
Speaking to some residents about the impact of the abandoned road project and other activities, they said the deplorable nature of the road was a source of worry to pedestrians and other road users and indicated that the situation worsened daily as result of the down pours during the rainy season.
Mr Peter Apoore, a resident of Bukere told GNA that several motorbikes and cars got stuck in parts of the road, adding “the other day two yogurt sellers got stuck there with their bicycles”.
Mr Apoore stated that the road becomes terrible when it rains and that it was causing lots of inconveniences to residents as motorist had to divert to different routes or risk using it and facing the consequences.
Mrs Rose Apamdor, a motorist informed the GNA that she preferred the Bukere road to Bolgatanga Township because it was shorter than other routes especially the Soe road and added that schools were resuming and wondered how school children would be able to use the road to school, particularly in its current state.
Mr Ignatius Alise, another resident whose house was close to the road, said road users were compelled to divert from the main road portions of his plot with some hitting his walls most often and appealed to the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to resource the contractor to come back to site to complete the road in order to prevent further accidents.
When the GNA contacted the Regional Director at the Department of Urban Roads, Mr Peter Amoako, he said the contractor working on the Bukere enclave roads M/S BUKAT Company abandoned the project, adding that as the Regional Director, he had written officially to the Head Office in Accra to terminate the contract and repackage it to be re-awarded, and urged the residents of Bukere to exercise patience for the Department to re-award the contract.
