Ho, Sept. 16, GNA- Eleven out of the 12 traditional areas that constitute the former Kpando District, on Wednesday endorsed North Dayi as the new name of the District. According to the traditional authorities, the new name reflects the rich cultural diversity of the area. Togbega Kwesi Sasraku II, Fiaga of Tsrukpe Traditional Area and the Spokesman, expressed their view in a resolution signed by the 11 Fiagawo (Paramount Chiefs) and presented to the Volta Regional Minister, Mr Kwasi Owusu-Yeboa.
The change in name, was effected by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), in consultation with the Electoral Commission, under Legislative Instrument 1740, to prevent the overlapping of the District into the newly created South Dayi District. The action by the chiefs was in reaction to a demonstration led by Togbega Dagadu VII, Paramount Chief of Kpando and his subjects at Kpando against the new name on September 4, this year. Togbega Sasraku urged the MLGRD and the Regional Coordinating Council, to exhaust all avenues of consultation with the chiefs, people and other identifiable stakeholders to deal with the issue. "We trust that nothing shall be done against the interest of the majority of the people."
Togbega Sasraku cautioned Chiefs in the area not to engage in activities that would breach the peace stressing, "it is our desire to participate in the forth coming elections in an atmosphere of peace, tranquillity and unity". "We hereby resolve and be it resolved that the official designated name of North Dayi District be maintained". Mr Owusu-Yeboa pledged to forward the resolution to the authorities concern. He appealed to the Chiefs to maintain the option of dialogue and consensus building to press home their grievances.
