Tamale, Dec 19, GNA - The Northern Regional Minister, Mr Ernest Debrah, has reminded motorists of the slogan: "If you drink, don't drive, if you drive, don't drink, to save innocent lives, especially during this Christmas period.''
This was contained in an address read for him to launch the Northern Regional "Road Safety Campaign Week" in Tamale on Friday. The campaign, which was aimed at educating drivers as well as the public on the dangers and effects of accidents, particularly during the Christmas festivities was under the theme: "Fatigue, over-speeding and drunkenness kill"
Mr Debrah said the region recorded about 499 accident cases involving 415 vehicles, resulting in 70 deaths and 93 injuries, while 84 motor bicycles and 28 bicycles were also involved in accidents with no deaths.
Police Chief Superintendent David Ampah-Bennin, deputy Northern Regional Police Commander, advised drivers and pedestrians to obey traffic regulations to ensure an accident- free Christmas. He said many people died through motor accidents, especially during Christmas, and urged passengers to be bold enough to tell drivers to stop over-speeding.
Mr Iddrisu Adam, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, cautioned the police against condoning and conniving with drivers who might break the law to ensure accident free Christmas in the region.
