School children donate to Cardio Centre

Accra, Jan. 18, GNA - Mrs Rebecca Essilfie, Principal Nursing Officer, cautioned on Tuesday that pregnant women should not be overstressed because this was likely to affect the foetus and create heart problems for it later in life.

She said in such a situation the child was likely to be born partially blind.

Speaking when school children from the St. Bernadette Soubirous School presented a five-million cedis cheque to the Centre to help treat children with heart diseases, Mrs Essilfie advised members of the public to go for medical check ups for heart problems twice every year. She said there were three children between the ages of five years and 14 years who were currently at the Centre with heart problems. Mrs Essilfie mentioned vascular and congenital heart diseases as some of the common heart problems most people faced.

She said untreated common cold and sore throat could also cause heart problems.

Mr Albert Fynn, Chairman of the School's Parent Teacher Association, said the donation was part of activities being organised in commemoration of the School's 25th anniversary celebration and also to help inculcate in the children the habit of giving and being kind to other people.

He said the amount was realised from a sponsored walk organised by the school in December 2004.
