Setting bushfires at harmattan season outmoded -MP

Mr Kwame Governs Agbodzah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Adaklu, has appealed to his constituents to desist from the annual ritual of setting bushfires especially during the harmattan season, describing the practice as outmoded and barbaric.

Mr Agbodzah made the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency at Adaklu-Kodzobi on Wednesday said he would reward communities which do not experience bush fires this year.

He said he was not happy that the area had gained notoriety for the practice which is destroying the vegetation.

“The devastating effects of bush fires are enormous because they do not only destroy the flora and fauna of an area but also properties and human lives,” he said.

Mr Agbodzah therefore urged chiefs, opinion leaders and assembly members to hand over anyone caught in the act to the law enforcement agencies.

He also tasked the Anti-Bushfire Volunteers in the area to intensify efforts at educating the people on the devastating effects of the menace.
