Shai chiefs launch 2015 Ngmayem festival

Nene Nornor Sordje V, President of Shai Traditional Council in the Greater Accra Region, has launched the 2015 Mgmayem festival with a call on the youth to resist acts that could bring the celebration into disrupt.

He warned that those who would fall foul with law would be dealt with by the police and urged citizens in the area to be vigilant to ensure a successful festivity.

Nene Sordje also advised the core youth groups and other civil society associations who would be involved in a special celebration dubbed: “By the Fire Side” not to compromise on discipline to make the programme a success.

He elaborated on the importance of Ngmayem festival, which according to him, is intrinsically linked to the Passover Feast celebrated by Jews and called on the citizens to maintain and protect the rich values of the tradition.

The President of the Council said a float, general clean-up exercise and marathon race by the Dodowa Town Youth Keep-fit Club as some of the activities line-up for the festival.

“There is going to be special traditional rites that will be performed in the Dodowa Forest and the Shai Hills which will be followed by a grand durbar of chiefs and people on October 3, at Dodowa,” he said.

Nene Sordje said Miss Ngmayem would be installed after thanksgiving service at the Presbyterian Church.

Mr Emmanuel Anyimi Odoi Lartey, Dangbe West District Chief Executive, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency gave the assurance that there would be a heavy police presence to ensure law and order during the celebration of the festival.
