Six assemblies in Volta to benefit from grant - Minister

Hohoe, Aug. 7, GNA - Six out of 18 Municipalities and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the Volta region, would benefit from the District Development Facility, a performance-based grant. Ho, Hohoe and Keta municipalities and Kpando, Akatsi and South Tongu districts would benefit from a nationwide 31-million dollar facility, an initiative of the Government of Ghana with donor partnership funding, aimed at deepening democratization, decentralization and good governance.

Mr. Joseph Zaphet Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, who announced these at the ordinary assembly meeting at Hohoe on Wednesday, said that assemblies which performed exceedingly well were scored according to a criterion to access a minimum of GHc 400,000. He mentioned transparency and accountability, fiscal regimes and capacity, planning, human resource capacity and systems, functional sub-district structures, procurement and sound environmental and sanitation management as the criterion. Mr. Amenowode encouraged the MDAs to work harder to facilitate their qualification and appealed to those assemblies that have not met the criteria to revise their books.

He expressed the hope that the region would be the best or among the best in the country. Mr. Victor-Hermann Condobrey, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, disclosed that according to the 2007 performance assessment, the assembly was expected to receive approximately GHc 583,000 for its development projects. He commended stakeholders including assembly members whose hard work, diligence, and cooperation culminated into satisfying the grant criteria.
