The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG) Prof. Ernest Aryeetey has called on African Union (AU) and citizens to speak out against injustices and human right abuses on the continent.
According to him, failure of these bodies to act often prompt intervention of the international community which further aggravates the plight of minority groups in countries where conflict is rife.
Prof. Aryeetey made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the first session of the 2016 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg memorial lectures held by the University.
A Professor with the Yale University Prof Ian Shapiro said regional and sub-regional blocks are better placed in dealing with conflicts and political domination.
He said foreign interventions often come with interests that do not benefit minority groups in conflict countries.
Speaking to Ultimate News on the sidelines of the programme, the Yale Professor indicated that ECOWAS and AU have achieved success in Northern Nigeria which could not have been achieved by the international community alone.
The Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg memorial lectures continue today Tuesday.
