Students at Tema Technical Institute on rampage

Tema, March 18, GNA- The Tema Police on Friday arrested six students of the Tema Technical Institute for going on a rampage and destroying school property.

Johnny Ayiku, Jewel Authur, Isaac Obeng, Isaac Okyere, Destiny Quarshie and Daniel Mensah who have been granted Police bail would reappear on Monday, March 21, on provisional charges of rioting and causing unlawful damage.

The Tema Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Daniel Laryea Odai, told the Ghana News Agency that Day students of the Institute had ignored persistent warnings and written notices by the authorities against reporting for school late.

He said to prevent continuous lateness the main gate of the Institute was closed at 0730 hours on Thursday morning. Some of the Day students who did not take kindly to the action allegedly went to the school campus in the night to cause trouble, but were chased out by their boarding counterparts.

However, on Friday morning the Day students returned to campus and vandalised louver blades, sets of furniture among other things at the main hall, the Vice Principal's office and the Tutors' Common Room. In another development 15 drug peddlers who were arrested at Abonkor, a suburb of Tema Manhean have been remanded into custody by the Tema Circuit Court 'A' and would re-appear on March 23. 18 March 05
