Pong-Tamale (NR), June 10, GNA - Thirty-six veterinarians from the Pong-Tamale Veterinary College in Pong-Tamale near Tamale on Wednesday passed out and they called on the government to create employable avenues for them to improve the livestock industry. Jonathan Kwame Gilando, the outgoing Student Representative Council (SRC) President, said students from veterinary colleges were frustrated when seeking employment from the private sector.
Gilando said anthrax could be controlled and prevented if veterinarians were given encouragement. He called for assistance such as a computer Laboratory, teaching aids, staff improvement and an assembly hall to improve academic work in the college.
Dr Joseph Gaari-Kweku, the Principal of the college, catalogued the frustrations of the college and appealed to NGOs and the government to help improve the situation. He said the college had so far turned out more than 1,800 veterinarians and that the college was doing its best to ensure that those who passed out were fully recognized in both the public and the private sector. Mr Sylvester Adongo, Northern Regional Director of the Food and Agriculture in a speech read on his behalf, said the college would be upgraded to a diploma-awarding institute in 2007.
