Mr Issah Mahmudu, Northern Region Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights Advocacy, an NGO, has said human rights education inculcate in people the virtues of discipline, responsibility and respect for others.
He appealed to Ghanaians to learn and know their rights to be able to protect the country's democracy and contribute to national development.
Mr Mahmudu was presenting the "Human Rights Friendly School Award 2002" to the Tamale Secondary School in recognition of the school's participation and contribution to the promotion of human rights education in the country.
He commended the school for having the highest number of 500 participants throughout the country and the teaching staff for their support to human rights education.
Mr Mahamadu said: "TAMASCO has proved wrong those who think that students should not be taught human rights", and urged the students to impart the knowledge they have acquired to their colleagues and members of their families.
Mrs Olivia Azara, a tutor, who received the award, a certificate, on behalf of the school, expressed gratitude to the NGO for educating the students on human rights and responsibilities.
Other institutions in Tamale, which benefited from the Centre's educational programme, were Vittin Senior Secondary School, University for Development Studies (UDS), School of Hygiene and Business/ Secondary School.
