Ashaiman, Feb. 24, GNA - The Tema Municipal Assembly in conjunction with the Ministry of local government and Rural development have constructed nine ten-setter Enviro-loo and two Aqua Privy toilets at a total cost of 1,350,000,000 cedis, from august 2004 within the Tema Municiplaity.
This to curtail littering and open defecation in the Municipality The Deputy Minister of Local Government, Mr Issa Ketekewu at Ashaiman, near Tema, inaugurated the ninth project on Wednesday. He observed that in recognition of the varied benefits of good sanitation the Assembly has never relented on its efforts to improve on the over all sanitation in the municipality and therefore commended it for that.
He announced that the Ministry under the Urban Environmental Sanitation Project, with support from the World Bank was supporting the assembly on its Liquid Waste Management, Community Infrastructure Upgrading, Institutional Strengthening Capacity, School Sanitation and on its household toilets components.
He however, shared the view of the TMA that more emphasis should be placed on household toilets, whiles public toilets were confined to public places such as lorry parks and markets and hoped that the policy would be accepted by all Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies in the country.
He also urged the beneficiary communities to exercise the culture of maintenance to ensure that the facilities lifespan are prolonged to serve their purpose.
The Acting Chief Executive of TMA, Mr Evans Ashong Narh regretted that a lot of plans submitted to the assembly for residential accommodation by developers had provision of toilet facilities included, but lot of them decide to use the place allocated for that facilities as rooms for renting.
The Municipal Planning Committee as a result has decided that plans without provision of adequate toilet facilities will not be approved, whiles the TMA inspectors ensure that approved plans are strictly adhered to on the ground.
