‘Take steps to tackle growing youth unemployment’

A lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Ernest Kwao, says tackling the growing joblessness among the youth must become an urgent priority of the government.

This, he noted, was in the interest of the nation’s security and said the lack of effort or commitment would simply be unhelpful.

He was addressing a seminar held in Kumasi to guide and aid young people, mostly students, to make the right career choices and decisions.

The programme was put together by Career Blueprint (CB), Ghana, an Information Technology (IT) and Media Professional Skills Training Institute, which has been assisting people to create wealth.

Dr. Kwao said there was the need for clearly defined policy interventions to bring hope to the youth and help them to live their dreams.

They could not continue to waste their abundant energies, talents, knowledge and skills, he said, pointing out that these needed to be tapped and channeled into productive ventures.

It was by so doing that, they would become not only useful to themselves and society but shielded from social evils and other temptations.

Mr. Peter Ben, the Chief Executive Officer of CB, Ghana, encouraged the youth to acquire skills in IT and said that could open up opportunities for them.

They should also have the courage to enter into business, he added.
