Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) Alhaji Abdul-Rahman Hanan Gundadow has disclosed that the Tamale Metropolis in the next five years can overtake Kumasi in terms of its net contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to him, the main driver of economic growth is stability with the provision of adequate security to businesses.
These he explained, are all in place within the metropolis which has been tagged as the fastest growing city in West Africa and as a result, becoming a major marketing centre south of the Sahel.
He stated on the Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko that the stability in the ancient city attracted a number of prominent financial institutions, and some businesses are taking advantage of the situation to set up and reap the benefits.
“Because of the stability and the fact that more and more businesses are showing interest in Tamale, we have an influx of financial institutions. All the major banks in this country have representation in Tamale. More and more businesses are taking advantage of the situation to access credits”, he said.
The Mayor observed that the target is feasible indicating that the assembly on its own, is ensuring a very conducive environment for businesses to set up despite the skewed media reportage about happenings in the area.
He disclosed that the construction of six major markets, empowering businesswomen, allocation of shops and the making loan facilities accessible to women is all aimed at opening up the business potentials of the area.
“Our women are industrious, and we need to help them to establish,” he said.
