Tarkwa Nsuaem Assembly assists PWDs

The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly on Tuesday disbursed a total of GH¢18,200 to persons living with disabilities (PWDs), in the area, as part of measures to ease their hardships.

A total of 52 PWDs applied for assistance this year, but only 26 benefited from the package due to limited funds.

Presenting a package of GHC700 to each beneficiary at a ceremony at Tarkwa, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mrs. Christian Kobinah, said two per cent of the District Assemblies Common Fund was set aside to support PWDs in every District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assembly.

She said the fund, which was aimed at supporting income-generating activities of the disabled, was established by the government to improve their living conditions and reduce poverty.

The MCE advised beneficiaries to desist from begging for alms, and register with the various disabled groups to enable them have access to funds to engage in profitable ventures.

The Municipal Financial Officer, Mr. Joseph Kwaku Adjei, urged the beneficiaries to ensure that they put the money they had received to good use.

The President of the Tarkwa Nsuaem branch of the Ghana Federation of the Disabled, Mr. David Okyere, thanked the government and the Assembly for the gesture.
