Teacher dies in accident

Abono (Ash), July 30, GNA - A teacher accompanying pupils of Asuofua Local Authority Primary School to Abono on an excursion to Lake Bosomtwe died on the spot, when the bus carrying them hit the side of a hill, somersaulted and landed on its side at the outskirts of the town. The driver's mate was pronounced dead at the Pramso Catholic Hospital.

The teacher was identified as Mr Lot Fokuo Amoako and the mate as Kofi Marfo.

The accident was attributed to overloading, since the bus was said to be carrying about 150 pupils.

An eyewitness told the Ghana News Agency at Abono on Friday that at about 1100 hours on Thursday, they heard about an accident at the outskirts of the town so they rushed there and found the bus lying on its side with the teacher already dead.

The eyewitness said the timely arrival of a crane saved a 12 year-old boy whose arm had been trapped in the wreckage from being amputated.

He said after removing the dead, they rushed the injured, including the mate to the Kuntanase hospital, while the others were sent to the Pramso Catholic Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

At the Kuntanase hospital, Dr K. K. Hussein, District Director of Health Services, said they treated and discharged 53 pupils and the other teachers.

Five pupils with deep cuts refused to be admitted. The Kuntanase Police confirmed the story but could the give the cause.
