A group of teachers in Ghana are commending the John Mahama led NDC government on the strides made towards acquiring USD 156 million loan to improve Senior High School Education in Ghana. The teachers, who identify themselves as the Platform for Elite Teachers (PET), are “particularly ecstatic that this facility among other things, shall inject a tremendous boost in our senior high school education through the construction of twenty three (23) new senior high schools, upgrading seventy five (75) existing schools and the expansion of fifty (50) more with ultra modern facilities, to improve performance and expand intake”. Spokesperson for the group, Puo-ire Prosper in a Press statement copied to Techiman-based Winners FM, observed that the facility is a timely intervention which will enable thousands of underprivileged children access to quality education. “Worthy of appreciation is also the component of the loan facility that shall grant scholarships to ten thousand four hundred (10400) students to pursue free senior high school education through the provision of necessities such as uniforms, supplementary textbooks, bags, sandals, pens, sanitary pads among others for less privileged children.” News of the facility has generated heated controversy for weeks with the various political parties biting political slices where convenient. The teachers have however expressed disappointment at what they term “mischievous and sordid reportage being propagated about the facility by some politicians as well as media personnel”. “We feel sad that the quest for making political capital from every policy in this country has driven some people into the politics of pettiness as far as this policy is concerned”, the statement revealed. According to the teachers, they “come daily in contact with children from various walks of life including the significant proportion of our female children who would gladly embrace a free sanitary pad policy as an answered prayer from the Almighty God.” The teachers congratulated the Ministers of Education for their foresight and hardwork in securing the loan and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their quest to develop the country’s education. -Bernard Buachi Winners FM, Techiman.
