Tema, March 5, GNA - The Tema Regional Office of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) registered 25,644 vehicles last year, showing a 59 percent increase over the 16,991 registered in 2010.
Alhaji Iddrisu Huseini, Tema Regional Licensing Officer, told the GNA in an interview that the registered vehicles included motor cycles, motor vehicles, buses, rigid trucks, articulator trucks and equipment.
Alhaji Huseini said the registrations yielded revenue of 1,625,778.00 Ghana cedis and added that the revenue that accrued from the 2011 registrations also showed a 67 percent increase over the 969,128.75 Ghana cedis received in 2010.
He said out of the 25,644 registered vehicles, new registration for motor cycles accounted for 1,619, while 2,342 motor cycles, changed their old numbers to new registration numbers.
Motor vehicles with cubic capacity less than 2,000, also received 7,953 registrations, while those with cubic capacity above 2,000 also accounted for 7,620 registrations, he said.
Alhaji Huseini said 1,951 buses and 2,959 rigid trucks were registered, adding that 622 articulator trucks and 578 tractors and forklifts were also registered during the period.
Alhaji Huseini said DVLA had entered into partnership with some private companies to inspect the vehicles before issuing registration numbers.
He explained that the partnership was aimed at de-congesting the office premises of the authority, adding that further inspections would be carried out on commercial vehicles by the Authority to ascertain if such vehicles were meant for commercial purposes.
