Tema, April 24, GNA - Members of the Tema District Council of Labour on Tuesday said they were prepared to accept members of the Industrial and Commercial Workers (ICU) in their midst to participate in this year's May Day parade to be held in Accra on May one. The Council of labour comprises of members of the labour unions under the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana
Mr. Wilson Agana, Chairman of the Tema branch of the Tema District Council of Labour (TDCL) made the declaration at the Council's general meeting held at Tema.
He made the declaration in an answer to a questions posed by the workers who wanted to know whether they should accept the ICU workers in their midst should they decide to join them in the parade. According to the workers they had heard that some members of the ICU had made their intention known to the council to participate in this year's workers day together with other members of the TDCL. Following a misunderstanding in the labour front between the TUC and the ICU the latter broke away in 2004 and has since been celebrating its workers day separately from the TUC.
Mr. Agana advised the workers to comport themselves during the parade and refrain from parading placards whose inscriptions are likely to bring the name of the union into disrepute. They should rather carry placards that would promote the interest of workers because the leadership of the nation would be at the parade and take note of what transpires there.
Mr. Harry Pieterson, Secretary of the TDCL impressed on the entire members to pay their monthly contributions to enable them to organise educational programmes on current issues affecting the labour front. The day which falls on Thursday is expected to be observed under the theme "Labour and national building; 50 years and beyond".
