The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Tema Regional Police Command recorded a total of 17 accidents with one death in the Tema Township during the Christmas period.
Superintendent Oduro Amening, Tema Regional MTTU Commander, told the Ghana News Agency on Thursday that, the accidents which occurred between December 21 and December 27 comprise one serious and 16 minor cases.
He said in one of accidents recorded at the Tema motorway tollbooth, Kenneth Bempeh, the driver in-charge of a highlander car drove the car under a parked articulator truck.
The MTTU Commander said Bempeh sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he died on Thursday morning.
He cautioned drivers against drunk-driving and over speeding during the yuletide noting that it would be better to go home by commercial vehicle when one is tipsy rather than driving under the influence of alcohol.
He said to reduce the worrying trend of accidents in Tema, his outfit would intensify its normal patrols and education during the holidays and advised drivers to adhere to the motor traffic regulations.
He said it was worrying that in recent times drivers in the Tema Region preferred placing their car number plates especially the DP and DV plates inside the vehicles instead of fixing them on the rear and front of the car as stipulated by the Highway Code.
It is act could lead to a GH¢ 600.00 fine, Supt Amening said.
