The NPP in the Tolon Constituency has accused the 2024 NDC parliamentary candidate, Osman Tahiru Damba, and some NDC supporters of orchestrating violence in Nyankpala on election day, resulting in the death of one person.

According to the NPP, Dr. Tahiru Damba led the group to the Nyankpala UDS polling station to disrupt the voting process.

At a press conference in Tolon, the Tolon Constituency Secretary of the NPP, Iddrisu Ganin Dawuni, condemned the acts of violence allegedly perpetrated by the NDC and urged the police to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The NPP Tolon secretary alleged that the NDC Parliamentary Candidate led the group to assault one person at the polling station and destroy a Toyota Hilux pickup belonging to the Regional Organizer of the NPP, Alhaji Abdul Rashid COP.

"They later moved to Nyankpala township, where they blocked the main road with a pickup and other objects, preventing some people from entering the constituency to vote. Amid sporadic shooting, one person lost their life. It is important to note that several buses were turned back by these thugs under the direction of the NDC candidate," he said.

Mr. Dawuni further claimed that the NDC had planned to create chaos to destabilize the voting process, stating, "Violence is in the DNA of the NDC."

"Ladies and gentlemen of the media, let me remind you of the violent tendencies of the NDC in the Tolon Constituency. During the 2020 limited registration exercise, NDC supporters blocked the road at Nyankpala, preventing buses from transporting people from Tamale to register. They destroyed the vehicles and subjected people to severe beatings. However, due to the timely intervention of the police, lives were saved.

"Similarly, during the 2024 limited registration exercise at the EC office, the NDC parliamentary candidate, Osman Tahiru Damba, was caught on video personally attacking one of our agents, Abdul Jalil, at the registration center. During the same registration exercise, the deputy constituency organizer of the NDC pulled out a gun, fired warning shots, ran out of bullets, and fled, but was later apprehended and disarmed. He was heard shouting that they would kill us like they killed Abu Hanifa at Jakpahi," he alleged.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we want to state unequivocally that the incidents leading to the violence, which resulted in the unfortunate death and injuries, should be squarely blamed on the NDC Parliamentary Candidate, Osman Tahiru Damba, and his Constituency Communication Officer, Seidu Fiter," he added.

The NPP claimed that audiovisual evidence shows the NDC deployed thugs to intimidate NPP members, sensing they were heading for another defeat during the peak of voting on December 7, 2024.

These individuals allegedly mounted roadblocks to prevent people from traveling to Tolon to vote, suspecting that they would vote against the NDC.

The Tolon Constituency NPP refuted assertions by the NDC that the Tolon MP-elect, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, was present at the scene of the violence allegedly orchestrated by the NDC, led by Osman Tahiru Damba.

"We have observed a deliberate attempt to implicate the MP of Tolon in the violence. We wish to state that Alhaji Habib Iddrisu was nowhere near the scene of the violence perpetrated by Osman Tahiru Damba and his associates," they said.

The NPP also alleged that the warehouse and residence of the Tolon MP were looted by NDC supporters after the NPP's Presidential Candidate, Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday.

"Not satisfied with their actions in Nyankpala and UDS, they broke into the warehouse of Hon. Habib Iddrisu in Tamale, where goods for his private business were stored. Over 100 assembled and yet-to-be-assembled SOYALANA-branded motorbikes, along with several sewing machines, were stolen. They later marched to his private residence at Old Airport, looted property, and nearly set it ablaze, but for the timely intervention of the military."

Mr. Dawuni stated that a formal complaint regarding the looting and attacks by the NDC supporters has been lodged with the Ghana Police Service.

"We call on the Ghana Police Service to thoroughly investigate these matters and bring the perpetrators to justice. This country is governed by laws, and we cannot allow individuals to flout them with impunity. The lives of every citizen matter and should not be lost due to the conduct of our opponents."
