Akyem Oda, May 25, GNA - Mr Frank Kwame Busumtwi, Birim South District Chief Executive on Friday urged members of Town, Urban and Area Councils to work hard for the success of the decentralisation concept. He said they were expected to take decisions and suggestions from the people to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies for deliberations and implementation for development. Mr Busumtwi made the call when inaugurating Akyem Akroso, Akyem Manso and Akyem Aperade Area Councils, Akyem Oda Urban Council, Akyem Asene/Akyem Aboabo, Akyem Achiase and Akyem Swedru Town Councils at separate functions.
He noted that inauguration of the councils would ensure improvement in grassroots participation in governance and enhance achievement of the desired goals and objectives "we have set for ourselves". Mr Busumtwi regretted that after several years of implementation, the decentralisation process had not achieved the required and desired results.
"This probably was the result of focusing activities of the district assemblies to the district capitals and few towns to the total neglect of the sub-structures," he added. Mr Busumtwi urged the members to be abreast with Government policies and programmes to be able to educate the people on them. "Education programmes such as malaria control, HIV/AIDS, literacy and anti-bush fire campaign should engage your attention". The Chairmen for the various councils were, Akyem Akroso-Mr Appiah Kubi, Akyem Oda - Nana Ahenkan Karikari Apau, Akyem Manso - Mr Yaw Antwi Bosiako, Akyem Asene - Reverend Aboagye Ankoma, Akyem Aperade - Mr Kissi Darko, Akyem Achiase - Mr Paul Asiedu and Akyem Swedru - Mr Dominic Boamah.
