Two VAT defaulters fined two million cedis

Cape Coast, March 24, GNA- Emmanuel Thompson, 54, proprietor of Morning Star Enterprise and Mrs Grace Gyesewah Jonah of Aloumekrom Restaurant both in Cape Coast, were on Wednesday fined one million cedis each by a circuit court at Cape Coast, for failing to issue VAT invoice receipts to customers.

They pleaded guilty and would go to prison for three months each in default.

Prosecuting, Police chief Inspector Augustine Amonoo told the court presided over by Mr Kwame Essel that the accused persons businesses both registered with Vat and that between September 23 and October 31, last year, the VAT secretariat organised a test purchase in registered shops and restaurants in the Municipality to ascertain whether people complied with laid down regulations on issuance of VAT invoices. He said during the exercise, it found that two enterprises failed to issue VAT invoice receipts and the matter was reported to the police.
