Two members appeal for the Completion of Nyakrom-Otsenkorang road

Adukrom (C/R), May 19, GNA - Two Assembly Members for Adukrom and Otsenkorang Electoral Areas of Agona West Municipal Assembly have appealed to the Central Regional Minister, Mrs Ama Benyiwa Doe, to intervene to ensure the early completion of the Agona Nyakrom-Otsenkorang road to facilitate movement of passengers and goods.

They also appealed to the Regional Minister to investigate the circumstance that led to the cancellation of a house project for cocoa farmers in the area after the programme was launched by former President John Agyekum Kufuor in 2007.

The project was to be financed by the Ghana Cocoa Board and the government.

Mr Robert Alex Adokoh and Mr John K.Ansah, made the appeal when they conducted the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Saturday to inspect the state of the road and the site for the housing project which was started in 2007. According to the two Assembly Members, the previous government decided to tar the road in 2007 to facilitate the evacuation of cocoa and food crops evacuation to the marketing centres but work on it had come to a halt due to the lack of funds.

They said that the contractor had removed all his machinery from the site about one-and-a-half years ago. Mr Adokoh who is also the Chairman of the Adukrom-Otsenkorang Area Council, further told the GNA that drivers plying the area had taken advantage of the bad nature of the road to charge exorbitant fares. According to the Assemblyman the drivers charged GHc1.50 in the morning and increased it to GHc2.00 in the evening from Swedru to Otsenkorang, adding that this was creating inconvenience to the people, mostly farmers. He said large quantities of cocoa had been locked up in most farming communities in the area due to the bad nature of feeder roads linking them, forcing the farmers to send their produce to the Eastern region to sell instead of selling it in the Central Region. Mr Adokoh mentioned the lack of good drinking water as another major problem facing the farmers who produced the greater portion of cocoa, the country's major foreign exchange earner. The Assemblymen, therefore, appealed to the Regional Minister and Minister of Roads to as a matter of urgency to come to their aid.
