UCMAS unveils world champion competition

Management of Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System (UCMAS), has unveiled Master Kwabena Asamoah, the world champion, who represented Ghana in the 18th UCMAS Abacus and Mental International Competition, held at Malaysia in December 2012.

Master Asamoah, a 10-year old class six pupil of Crown Prince Academy at Dansoman was adjudged the overall best student in the competition out of 2500 pupils from about 50 countries throughout the world.

Mr Girish Gurbani, Director of UCMAS Ghana Limited, who disclosed this in a press briefing on Tuesday in Accra, said master Asamoah in 2012 won the national champion UCMAS competition in Accra and Obuasi and received a laptop and a sponsorship package to represent the 18th UCMAS International competition.

UCMAS is an educational group, which engages in the holistic training of the right brain of children. UCMAS Ghana Limited is a professional organization established in 1983 headed by a team of directors dedicated to offering society a novel and path-breaking method of education in mental arithmetic.

Mr Gurbani said UCMAS started its operations in the country in 2007 in all the regions operating in 100 learning centres and are in partnership with over 50 schools running the UCMAS programme as a school curriculum activity.

The international competition is an annual event organized by UCMAS Education Group, which brought together over 3000 children between five and 14 years from all over the world to compete at different levels.

Mr Gurbani said all the children did 100 to 200 arithmetic sums within 8 minutes to test the speed, confidence, concentration and their photographic memory.

He said mental arithmetic is a form of calculation that does not involve the use of physical instruments but solely done by the human mind using the mind’s power in performing calculations.

Mr Gurbani said some of the benefits of the programme included improved photographic memory skills, listening skills, concentration skills, presentation skills, imagination and creativity skills, speed and accuracy and removes mathematics phobia and all round academic proficiency.

He urged parents to take advantage of the programme and enroll their children with UCMAS to boost their confidence level and enhance their creativity for the betterment of the country.

Mrs Anastasia Adoma Kenyah, Mother of Master Asamoah, thanked management of UCMAS for developing her child to unearth his talents and urged parents to take serious activities of their wards’ education.
