The Women’s Commission of University of Ghana will launch its week-long activity to reinvigorate students’ lives on campus.
The event under the theme, “Strategising for the Future; The Woman and Her Environment”, would enable them to realize the challenges that lie ahead of their lives and ways to tackle them as and when they come.
In an interview with Ms. Antoinette Makafui Ashiadey, the Women’s Commissioner of the University of Ghana said it was important for ladies to plan for their future whiles in school to enable them to learn ways and adapt positively in the field of business, family and religion.
The five-day event would be launched with a fashion show dubbed “Aketesia Fashion Show” aimed at informing students on how to dress appropriately.
“We want the fashion show to define fashion in the African context. We are hoping that with this show students will learn from seasoned designers like Tony Black Couture, Kama by Kilson and Qwami Wear, who will talk to the students about African fashion and dressing appropriately,” she said.
She said after the launch there would be a women’s summit, which would see inspirational speakers talk to the student body on several topics.
Speakers at the event include Madam Grace Amey-Obeng, Chief Executive Officer of FC Perfumery, Dr. John Egyir Croffet, Director of the Counseling and Placement Centre of the University and Mrs Rita Rockson, Corporate Relations Manager of Guiness Ghana Limited.
According to Ms. Ashiadey, the rationale behind embarking on such a project was to underscore the relevance of the theme selected for the week long celebration.
“Because we are women and strategising for the future, we thought it wise to practice what we preach by doing something worthwhile for the environment; that is by renovating and painting the school. The girls will share lunch and also spend quality time with pupils of Da Awatul Islamic School to put smiles on their faces”, she said.
“We are impacting two groups of people. First of all we are inspiring the students of UG because we want to instil the culture of giving back to society in a befitting manner in them, by helping this very deprived school. Secondly, the pupils of Da Awatul Islamic School will also be inspired because we will be donating some materials as well as touching lives and sharing quality time with them,” she noted.
The climax of the activities will be a dinner and awards night where students will converge to wine and dine.
The Commission will also be awarding the companies and individuals who have supported them, including RLG, Coca Cola, Kasapreko, CIMA, Voltic and MVP.
