Upper East GNAT constructs 2.6 Billion Cedis Hall

Bolgatanga, Dec 19, GNA - Teachers in the Upper East Region have embarked on a 2.6 billion-cedi Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) complex hall project in Bolgatanga.

Mr Simple Atiiro, Regional GNAT Chairman, said this at an emergency Regional Delegates' Conference in Bolgatanga.

Mr Atiiro said the project, which was previously pegged at 1.7 billion cedis, has run into deficit because instead of deducting 15,000 cedis per teacher for 25 months, 10,000 cedis was rather deducted thus creating a shortfall.

He said when that problem was rectified the National Association of Graduate Teachers threatened taking the Accountant- General to court for deducting money from its members for GNAT.

Mr Atiiro said when that issue was eventually resolved and deductions resumed the cost of building materials and other costs including bank charges and consultancy had escalated, giving rise to the need to seek the mandate of teachers to extend the time frame to raise the 2.6 billion cedis required.

He pleaded with the delegates to endorse the proposal for the extension of time to facilitate the completion of the project that is at lintel level.
