Bawku (U/E), Dec.11, GNA - The Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, on Monday joined the family of the late Alhaji George Belko to observe the one-week celebrations of his death at Bawku. The late Alhaji Belko, an educationist, was the immediate headmaster of the Tamale Secondary School who passed away last week after a short illness at the age of 65.
He was accompanied by Francis Afoko and C.K Tedam, both Members of the Council of State, the Deputy Regional Minister, Alhaji Awudu Yeremeah together with the Chief Executives from Bawku, Bawku West and Talensi-Nabdam districts assemblies. Alhaji Mahama presented cash of five million cedis and five crates of minerals to the widows and family towards the final funeral rites of the deceased.
He said the government would not fail to recognize distinguished citizens who have contributed towards national development, adding that such people will be remembered for their sterling duty to help mother Ghana.
The head of the Belko family expressed the family's gratitude to the Vice-President for his personal presence at the funeral grounds and the relationship he had built with the family over the years. Earlier, the Vice-President paid a courtesy call on the Bawku Naba, Abugrago Asigri Azoka II at his palace, where he presented drinks as custom demands and an undisclosed some of cash to the paramountcy. He later interacted with the Muslim community at the central mosque and donated three hundred bags of cement for the completion of the mosque.
