Volta Region students hold congress

Ho, Aug 02, GNA - Globalisation and factors including laxity in parental care and guidance account for the rising moral decadence among the youth, Ms Rosemond Keteku, Deputy Volta Regional Director of Education, has said.

She said this at the second annual residential congress of the Volta Regional Student Representative Council at Ho on Tuesday. Ms Keteku mentioned the fight for survival, lack of self-control and the lack of self-confidence as some of the other factors. She said the dynamic nature of culture required that successive generation were guided and directed by their predecessors, in order to keep societal values intact.

Ms Keteku said their duty had been left for audio and visual materials that came in many forms.

She said those foreign materials exposed the youth to many negative values such as the rejection of decency and the desire for pleasure and success without a corresponding crave for serious studies. Ms Keteku appealed to SRCs on campuses to appreciate and understand the principles underlying the creation of codes of discipline and apply them to resolve the challenges on their campuses.

Mr Courage Kwame-Kumash, the President of VRSEC, said the major factor of decline in academic standards of the region was due to the increase in unhealthy boy/girl relationships in second cycle institutions.
