WAFUS calls for guidelines for Educational Fund

Tarkwa (W/R), July 6, GNA- The Wassa Fiase Students Union (WAFUS) has called on the Wassa Fiase Traditional Council to come out with guidelines on the sponsorship of students from an education fund initiated by the Omanhene of the area.

Mr Paul Onipa Yeboah, President of the Union, made the call at a meeting with stakeholders of the fund at the weekend.

He said while the institution of the fund was laudable, modalities for accessing the fund had not been clearly spelt out, making it difficult for students to apply.

Mr Yeboah disclosed that the Union was lobbying for the government to increase mineral royalties to enable chiefs in the area to increase their contributions to the fund.

He said the Union was also working out an arrangement with the National Service Secretariat to have its members to undertake their national service in the area.

Mr Tawiah Amprofi, District Chief Executive for Mpohor Wassa East, called on traditional rulers in the area to expedite action on the establishment of a secretariat for the fund.

He said the Mpohor Wassa East District Assembly would contribute 10 per cent of its share of stool lands royalties into the fund. Mr Emmanuel Ayensu, Wassa West District Chief Executive, said the district assembly would continue to sponsor needy students despite the establishment of the educational fund.
