Accra, Jan. 20, GNA - The West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAGPCo) on Wednesday donated a spectrophotometer, an equipment for measuring light intensity, to the Science Faculty of University of Ghana. The use of the device is not limited to studies in physical science alone but can also be used in other scientific fields such as Medical Chemistry, Biochemical Research, Agricultural Research and Food Processing.
Mr. Jack Derickson, the Managing Director of WAGPCo, who made the donation, said the equipment would help in analysis of samples to deepen students' understanding of the study of science. He said WAGPCo was committed to contributing to the betterment of society through the building of capacity in partner institutions. Mr. Derickson added that the same donation would be made to three other institutions in the three other countries forming the West African Gas Pipeline - Nigeria, Togo and Benin. He therefore urged the administration to use the equipment for the purpose for which it was donated. Professor D.K. Asiedu, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Science of the University of Ghana, said the donation was unique because it was initiated by the donors themselves. "We are very grateful to WAGPCo for selecting our faculty to benefit and we hope that this donation would be the beginning of a close and fruitful collaboration between our faculty and WAPCo," he said. Prof. Asiedu said though the equipment would be housed at the Chemistry Department, students and staff from other departments would also have the opportunity to use the facility. The West African Gas Pipeline Company owns the West African Gas Pipeline project which is meant to transport natural gas from Nigeria, to Benin, Togo and Ghana. 20 Jan. 10
