Wa West District Assembly to undertake mango project

Wechiau(UWR), May 09, GNA - The Wa West District Assembly in collaboration with the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council and Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) have acquired 20 hectares to establish a mango project in the district. Mr Daniel Kuusongno, Wa West District Chief Executive who disclosed this to newsmen at Wechiau, said about 50 individuals and families would have access to micro-credits to establish mango plantations on the land and marketed by ADB.

The project, he said, would not only improve family incomes of the beneficiaries but also create jobs and improve the living standards of the people.

Mr Kuusongno said plans were underway to develop seven dams at Eggu, Gurungu, Dabo, Masse, Dorimon, Naasa and Wechiau to promote agriculture during the dry season to encourage the youth in the area to stay at home to work and earn income.

He said technical assessment of the dam sites and water sources for irrigation had already been undertaken and were waiting for the completion of the engineering processes before the award of contracts for construction to begin.

On water and sanitation, the DCE said 500 house-hold latrines were currently under construction in the district and acknowledged the contribution of Pro-Net Ghana, an NGO and the Trachoma project for providing 22 hand dug wells and 492 house hold latrines for some communities within the district.
