Wassa West Assembly supports Education Fund

Tarkwa (W/R), Sept 13, GNA - The Wassa West District Assembly has made its first contribution of 210 million cedis to the Wassa Fiase Education Fund.

Osagyefo Kwamina Enimil V1, Omanhene of Wassa Traditional Area, announced the largesse at the First Annual General Meeting of the Wassa Fiase Traditional Council held at Tarkwa. The Education Fund was established to support citizens of the area who need financial assistance in pursuit of tertiary education. The Omanhene said the traditional council had also made an additional payment of 50 million cedis to the Fund but regretted that the Mpohor Wassa East District Assembly was yet to pay 10 per cent of its mineral royalties to the Fund and urged them to expedite action on it.

Osagyefo Enimil VI said the Council would put up a hostel for the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in the near future to solve some of the accommodation problems facing it and pledged 20 million cedis to the UMaT Endowment Fund.

He said the Board of Trustees of the Wassa Fiase Education Fund had approved 17 applications for scholarships to needy Wassa students in various Secondary Schools and promised the continued support of the students by the Traditional Council. The Omanhene said efforts were being made in collaboration with the management of GOIL to establish petrol station in the area and hoped they would become operational very soon.

He said proceeds from the filling station would be ploughed back into a six billion cedi stone quarry to be built at Wassa Darmang. The meeting, which was attended by 36 sub chiefs representing the various towns and villages, was also used to discuss issues such as reviewing marriage rites, funeral, taboos and land acreage systems. 13 Sept. 05
