Water, electricity and roads, major problems of Asante-Akim South

Juaso (Ash), Feb 09, GNA - Water, electricity and roads dominate the myriad of problems facing rural communities in the Asante-Akim South District.

Notwithstanding the numerous efforts being made by the district assembly and the Member of Parliament for the area to address the situation, the three basic amenities remain the most desired facilities of the rural dwellers, most of who have threatened not to vote in the 2008 elections if the situation does not improve. These came to light when Mrs Gifty Ohene-Konadu, the MP for Asante-Akim South, toured the constituency.

Virtually all the towns and communities the MP visited complained about poor roads, lack of electricity and potable water. People took turns during open forums to asked questions regarding water, electricity and roads.

In his address at the third ordinary meeting of the third session of the assembly Dr Lord Justice Gyamfi-Fenteng, the District Chief Executive, said 52 boreholes had been drilled in 38 communities under the Community-Based Rural Development Project (CBRDP). The Ashanti Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Project was also been launched at Juaso a fortnight ago.

On electricity, Dr Gyamfi-Fenteng said 22 communities in the district were to be hooked onto the national electricity grid under the Self-Help Electrification Project (SHEP IV).
