Water shortage hits 35 communities in Gomoa West and East Districts

Agona Swedru, July 4, GNA - About 35 communities in the Gomoa West and East districts have been disconnected from water supply following the destruction of the main pipe line that supplies water to them from the Agona Kwayanko Water Works. Floods that hit Agona Swedru following the June 20 downpour destroyed the pipeline.

The communities include, Gomoa Dawurampong, Pinako, Afransi, Achaise, Gomoa Gyaman, Gomoa Obuasi, Gomoa AKrompong and Gomoa Lome. Mr Baffour-Addea, Agona West Municipal Manager of the Ghana Water Company, explained the situation to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, at Agona Swedru.

According to Mr Baffour-Addea, the continued heavy downpour at Agona Swedru caused much destruction in the area, including a severe damage to the main pipe line that supplies water to Gomoa West and East District at a point at Agona Swedru. He said the Company had contracted the Dinal Company in Accra to reconstruct the pipeline to ensure early water supply restoration to the affected communities.

He, therefore, appealed to the people in the affected areas to bear with the company.

Mr Baffour-Addea said the company was currently offering tanker water supply at a drastically reduced price to the affected communities and urged the people to use water economically during this difficult period. The Assistant headmaster of the Gomoa Dawurampong Secondary Technical School told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that the water shortage had compelled the school authorities to buy water from water tanker services at the cost of GHC100.00 per trip.

He said sometimes the students were also asked to go and look for water from the town, a situation that affected teaching and learning and expressed the hope that water supply would be restored to alleviate their suffering. 04 July 10
