The Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, stated that the government is investing in state-of-the-art school infrastructure to meet the needs of 21st-century learning.
These projects, the Minister mentioned, will revolutionize the country’s educational space and make it suitable for purpose.
Dr. Adutwum noted that the Juaben model of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Senior High School (SHS), the Sunyani model of STEM SHS, and others are currently underway and nearing completion.
He also mentioned that the Accra STEM School, from kindergarten to the SHS level, has already been completed and is set to open in September 2024.
Dr. Adutwum made this announcement during the opening of this year’s International Educators Summit held at the International Community School in Accra.
The summit was themed; "Reimagining Education for the Future We Seek: Africa and the World in Dialogue" and organized by the Ghana Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD).
The education minister highlighted that the government has invested in renovating schools like Kumasi High School and Aflao Community SHS with modern educational facilities to enhance learning outcomes.
He also mentioned that the government has chosen 12 SHS schools to offer aviation and aerospace courses to promote STEM education in the country.
"We need to teach school children to be assertive, confident, and express themselves without fear.
"School heads should create a supportive school environment for students to ask questions in class instead of feeling intimidated," he said.
He praised the organizers of the Summit, stating that the event serves as a catalyst for change by nurturing ideas.
Yaw Osafo-Maafo, Senior Presidential Adviser on his part emphasized that education must play a significant role in addressing problems.
"We should consider education as a means to solve issues like sanitation and flooding, among others," he said.
Good values are critical
Dr. Patrick Awuah, Founder of Ashesi University, stressed the importance of instilling good values in students for success.
"Integrity and performance are closely linked. Our students do not view cheating as a path to success," he said.
Dr. Charles Yeboah, Executive Director of Ghana ASCD, mentioned that the Summit aimed to tackle challenges in the education sector and explore new educational technology frontiers.
He added that since its establishment in 2017, Ghana ASCD has been hosting educational conferences tailored for teachers and school administrators to enhance education in the country.
