West Akyem District Assembly discusses sanitation problem

Asamankese,( E/R) Nov. 18, GNA - The West Akyem District Chief Executive, Mr. Kwabena Sintim Aboagye has observed that, the greatest challenge facing the Assembly was sanitation. He said when the assembly was able to tackle sanitation properly and effectively then more than half of the problem confronting the district would have been solved.

Addressing the District Assembly at Asamankese, Mr Aboagye expressed concern about the littering of the environment without regard to the cost involved in clearing the filth.

He noted that, drains were chocked with sand, polythene bags and dirt, while individuals also dumped their household refuse at unauthorized places.

Mr Aboagye said to bring some level of sanity to the environment, it was being proposed that more refuse containers and litterbins be placed at vantage points in towns for rubbish to be put in them. He appealed to landlords to release land to the Assembly for sitting of the containers.

Mr Aboagye said the Assembly would soon take delivery of two new tractors in addition to its sanitation equipments to enhance, collection of the ever-increasing garbage in the district. He said at a meeting with GPRTU, it was agreed that they should put refuse bins in their vehicles.

Mr Aboagye said there had been a suggestion for the establishment of a sanitation task force in the District to, among other duties, arrest and punish anyone caught degrading the environment and that a "clean village award" be instituted to reward communities who kept their environment clean.

He called on the communities to undertake tree planting at their communities and in schools to beautify the environment and serve as windbreaks.
