Western Region undertakes exercise to disinfect markets and other places

The Western Region as part of measures to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country has undertaken an exercise to disinfect the markets, transport terminals and other places.

The exercise which forms part of government's efforts to get rid of COVID-19 was carried out by the Local Government Ministry with support from the Western Regional Coordinating Council and the MMDAs across the region.

Although the Western Region has not recorded any case of COVID-19, it has become prudent for the region to undertake the exercise to ensure the region does not record any case.

1,680 sprayers were engaged in the exercise to disinfect the region against the spread of COVID-19.

The exercise which was scheduled to begin today April 6, 2020, at 0600 hrs was begun 07:30 hrs in Takoradi and some part of the region.

About 14 districts with 117 markets in the region were disinfected during the exercise.

The exercise was awarded to a local company ASLORD LTD with support from the AMI Services to lead the fumigation exercise in the region.

Traders, shop owners and markets women adhered to the directives by closing their shops and businesses to allow the exercise become effective.

The Western Regional Minister, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah in an interview said the disinfection of the markets and other places in the region is part of the exercise and measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the region.

He indicated that local people was trained to be engaged by the contractor to undertake the exercise so that anytime there would be the need to carry out such exercise, they can fall on them without employing the services of any other personnel outside the region.

He admonished all and sundry to support the program and also adhere to the directives given by the President to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

The Chief Executive of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Anthony K. K. Sam after the exercise commended the security personnel and the media for their participation and advised Ghanaians to guide themselves against filth as well as observing the social distancing protocol and other directives to protect themselves from spread of COVID-19.

The Executive Director of GNPC Foundation, Dr. Dominic Eduah, also in an interview advised the public not to be afraid because the region is ready to combat COVID-19, stop and maintain the spread if the region record any positive case in the coming days.

The Western Regional Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Benedict Addae on his part told the youth to take the outbreak of the virus in the country seriously and adhere to all the directives to protect themselves from contracting the virus.
