A Woman and her baby were killed on Monday after they were crushed to death by a timber truck at Kramokrom near New Edubiase in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region.
Thirty-one year-old Afia Akoma with her three-year-old baby girl strapped at her back was walking along the road when she was trapped by the rear tyres of the truck’s trailer.
The tyre of the truck, with registration number AS 1990 S, then hit the woman and rolled over her and the baby around 5:30 pm.
Afia Akoma, a native of Gomoa Odwobi in the Central Region, was returning to her base after attending a funeral in the farming community when the tragic incident occurred.
ASP Martin Assenso, New Edubiase District Police Commander, said the accident left the upper part of the body of the woman and baby, Abena Nyarkowaa, crushed with the brains of the two unfortunate victims splattering out of the head while the stomach burst open.
According to the police commander, it was a sorrowful and horrific sight to watch after the gory death of the young woman and her baby .
The police chief said the driver of the truck, Paul Bori, 54, claimed he drove pass the woman and never anticipated trapping her and the baby.
ASP Assenso said the driver was in police custody assisting with investigations. Meanwhile both Afia Akoma and the child’s body had been deposited at the New Edubiase Government Hospital morgue.
