Sekondi, Sept. 26, GNA- The Western Regional Population Advisory Committee on Friday called on needy women to take advantage of the Poverty Reduction Fund to enable them to go into income generating ventures to support their families. The Committee made the call at a day's seminar on advocacy on population issues organised by the National Population Council for its members in Sekondi.
It said this would make it possible for poor families to take adequate care of the children particularly the girl-child in school, noting that, poverty is the mitigating factor against girls continued education.
The committee urged the government and the district assemblies to increase the number of scholarships for both boys and girls from poor families.
It said more girls were now being retained in schools than in the past and this shows that the education on teenage pregnancy has gone down well.
The Committee said girls should be encouraged to enter into male dominated professions and to aspire to higher levels of education instead of acquiring just vocational skills.
