Work Begins On Kaneshie Lorry Station

THE Accra Markets Limited is spending over ¢1 billion to construct a lorry terminal at the Kaneshie market.

Construction work has commenced and is expected to be completed in October.

When the Times visited the market yesterday, a bulldozer was at work clearing the area. stores, stalls and other structures such as kioks and tables had all been removed to pave way for the work;

The Kaneshie lorry station had become a source of concern for travellers because of the congestion and poor sanitary conditions, especially during the rainy season.

It is used by vehicles that ply Kaneshie to Takoradi, Cape Coast, parts of Eastern, Greater Accra and the Volta Regions, among others.

Briefing the Times the Managing Director of the Accra Markets Limited, . Kwaku Kra-Gyamera, said the work includes tarring, construction of drains and provision of waiting sheds for passengers.

He said that originally the market authorities wanted to construct a three-storey car park but due to financial constraints it had been compelled to construct the station first.

Mr. Kra-Gyamera said that currently, the station is used daily by more than 700 vehicles, mostly commercial ones, but the number will increase after the project.

He said that a separate terminal will be created for private vehicles to reduce the difficulties that visitors to the market go through in getting parking space for their cars.

"We have received complaints from some people that their vehicles are clamped by the AMA task force when they park to shop or visit the banks.

He gave the assurance that the market would keep sourcing funds to construct the three-storey car park at the market in the subsequent phases of the project.

Touching on the sanitation situation at the station, Mr Kra-Gyamera, said that after the project, litter bins will be provided at different locations to check the indiscriminate disposal of waste at the market.
