Workers complain LET has not issued them certificates

Ho, Dec. 13, GNA - The Ghanaian workers' apathy and attitude to time was on display at a meeting organized by the executives of the Ho branch of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) on Tuesday.

The meeting, which was to start at 1000 hours, finally got underway at 1100 hours with representatives from 10 local unions.

When the Ghana News Agency got there at about 1005 hours only representatives from the National Youth Council (NYC) and the Centre for National Culture (CNC) local unions were present.

The meeting was called to brief members of the PSWU on the 2006 15 per cent salary increment for all subvented organizations, the Government White Paper on Pensions and the Labour Enterprise Trust (LET) Company. Mr. Gordon Bodza, Volta Regional Industrial Officer of the PSWU, said countries that relied on their human resource and motivate them well were economic giants today and advised the government not pay lip service to workers' welfare.

Mr. Bodza said the era of "master-servant" was gone and that the government should see workers as partners in the governance and development of the country.

The workers said it was high time they moved from the "era of hope to success" and appealed to government to pay workers "the living wage it promised in the 2006 budget.

They complained that most workers did not receive certificates for the shares they bought in the LET and appealed to those managing the enterprise to expedite action on the certificates.
