Youth Alliance and Action for Change (YAAC), a youth-centred organization, has called for the digital empowerment of young people and the maintenance of global peace as the world marks International Youth Day (IYD).

YAAC underscored the critical role of young people in leveraging digital technology to forge a sustainable and inclusive future achievable in a peaceful atmosphere of global coexistence.

In a press statement released on August 12, 2024, to mark the day, under the theme "From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development," YAAC urged global leaders and communities to recognize and harness the transformative power of youth-driven digital innovation.

The press statement, signed by the YAAC Convener, Dr. Eunice Yorgri, acknowledged the pivotal role of young people in the ongoing digital and industrial revolution, stating that “the youth stands at the forefront of this digital revolution, using technology to drive progress, create opportunities, and build a more inclusive and sustainable world.”

It further emphasized the importance of empowering the youth with the necessary tools, resources, and support to translate their digital skills into concrete actions that contribute to a better tomorrow.

"We believe in the potential of the youth to lead a future that is not only technologically advanced but also socially and environmentally responsible.

"On this day of commemoration, we salute the youth who are striving to have a better future," the statement added.

Meanwhile, YAAC did not shy away from drawing attention to the numerous challenges that confronted and continue to hinder the ability of young people to fully realize their potential.

“Nevertheless, the youth of the present day face a lot of challenges, including unemployment, drug addiction, different forms of oppression, and deprivation of all forms due to wars, conflicts, climate change, and unfavorable policies and economic conditions,” it said.

It is thus noted that these issues must be tackled to ensure that young people can fully realize their potential.

YAAC also made a passionate appeal for global peace and improved conditions for all people in the world, particularly the youth.

“We call for international peace and better conditions for all, especially the youth, who are and will continue to be the future leaders," the statement read.

With over 1.8 billion young people worldwide, which the United Nations said represents a significant force for change, the call to action from YAAC resonates deeply with the path the world is charting within the context of global youth empowerment.

The involvement of youth in digital innovation is not only shaping industries but also driving movements for social justice, environmental sustainability, and economic equality.

Every August 12, since 2000, has been designated by the United Nations to recognize the potential, achievements, and contributions of young people across the globe as essential partners for building a better future for our world.
