Some youth and elders at Tishigu, a suburb of Tamale, on Saturday declared their support for an ongoing construction of a bus terminal in the area saying, it would lead to a boom in business activities in the area.

They argued that the project, when completed, would complement government’s efforts at creating jobs thereby, addressing youth unemployment in the area.

Mr Sulemana Iddrisu, one of the leaders of the youth in the area, who addressed a press conference in Tamale on Saturday to declare their support for the project, said concerns raised by other residents against the project were without merit.

On May 29, this year, a private company commenced the construction of a bus terminal at Tishigu area, and so far, the foundation for the project has been laid.

However, some family heads and property owners near the project site raised health and safety concerns about the project on the environment saying, the area was designated as residential, that did not require a bus terminal, which was a commercial facility.

They, therefore, petitioned the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly to stop the project, and subsequently had also secured an interim injunction to halt the construction works on the project.

Mr Iddrisu claimed majority of residents at Tishigu supported the project because of the enormous benefits it would bring to the area.

He said “We, the residents, wish to set the records straight that we are aware and in full support of the construction of the bus terminal, which has over the period been in the center stage in the creation and provision of jobs in any community it operates”.

He called on other residents, who did not support the project, “To look beyond their personal interest and engage the company for amicable solution”.
