The Concerned Youth of the Naniik Clan in the Bunkpurugu-Nakpanduri District of Ghana's North East Region addressed tensions surrounding the recent elevation of the Naniik Chief to paramountcy.
The youth have called for calm and peaceful dialogue, stressing the need to protect the longstanding relationship between the Naniik and Tanmung Clans.
The press release came in response to a previous statement by Lawyer Mahama Dubik, who, in addressing the Tanmung Clan's opposition to the elevation, made remarks that the Naniik youth found inflammatory.
According to the spokesperson for the Concerned Youth, Duwaar Dubik, the lawyer's comments could potentially incite conflict between the two historically peaceful clans.
"We find the language and assertions used by Lawyer Mahama Dubik deeply troubling and a recipe to bring about clan clashes," Duwaar Dubik said.
He further noted that the statements threaten to disrupt the "longstanding peace and harmony" that has existed between the clans.
The Concerned Youth emphasized that the current disagreement is solely about the elevation of the Naniik Chief to paramountcy, refuting claims that it involved land ownership or allegiance. "It is not true that the Tanmung people are tenants on Naniik’s lands, nor is it true that they owe allegiance to the Konkonba Chief," the press release clarified.
Instead of dwelling on divisive statements, the Naniik youth called for unity and a focus on community development. "We appeal to our uncles, nephews, brothers, and sisters in the Tanmung Clan to allow peace to prevail," the youth stated, encouraging dialogue and cooperation.
In addition, the group proposed the formation of a committee to engage elders and write the correct history of the Naniik Clan and its lands. The youth also urged leaders from both clans to prioritize job creation over conflict, with Duwaar Dubik adding, "Our leaders should focus on creating employment opportunities for the youth, rather than stirring up issues that could further impoverish our communities."
The Naniik Clan remains hopeful that with the involvement of both youth and elders, the matter can be resolved amicably, allowing development initiatives such as school expansion and electrification projects to proceed uninterrupted.
The press release concluded with a call for continued peace and unity, saying, "Let us engage in dialogue to find an amicable solution that will foster growth and development in our area."
