CCG elects new chairperson

Accra, May 17, GNA - Rt Rev Dr Yaw Frimpong-Manso, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana has been elected the new Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG).

A statement signed by Rev Dr Fred Deegbe, General Secretary of the Council on Thursday, said the election was conducted during its recent Annual General Meeting in Accra, which also elected Rev Steve Asante, President of the Ghana Baptist Convention as the Vice Chairman. The statement said the Council registered a strong protest against the refusal of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to recognize the signatures of the clergy on forms of candidates applying to write various examinations under the WAEC.

The Council said the action was an attack on the integrity of the clergy in the country and asked WAEC to come out clearly on the policy and give reasons for which it was lumping all Ministers of the Gospel together.

The statement also said the AGM again expressed concern about the unhealthy practices of some surface mining companies whose activities were degrading the soil and the environment of communities in which they operated.

The Council called for effective monitoring of the activities of those companies to save the environment and further expressed gratitude to the media for the work they were doing in exposing the many wrongs in the society.
